Maintaining access to European markets

On 2 October 2024, the European Commission (EC) announced it would delay the commencement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), to allow international partners more time to prepare for the changes.

The EUDR requirements will now take effect from 31 December 2025 and will apply to any beef, beef products and leather/hides exported to the European Union (EU).

As part of the Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program, accredited producers supplying to the EU market can now share their geolocation to enable continued access to European markets in line with the requirements of the EUDR, as well as Australia’s commitment to best practice land management.

The new tool will enable producers who export to the EU to maintain control of their data by:

  • opting-in to providing their geolocation using a simple map tool (via the LPA), and
  • providing their consent for ISC to share their geolocation with Australian feedlots and processors for the purpose of EU market access. No Property Identification Codes (PICs) will be shared.

LPA-accredited producers can provide their geolocation and consent to share this data by logging into their LPA Account and navigating to the Programs page.

If producers choose not to share their geolocation, beef, leather/hides from their cattle may not be eligible for entry into the EU.

From early 2025, the NLIS will provide exporters with the capability to search NLIS devices (via a new NLIS report) and obtain shared geolocation data over the lifetime of the animal. This geolocation data can then be shared with their EU importers who will verify compliance with the EUDR requirements. This will enable the continued export of beef, beef products and leather/hides to the EU.

Please note: The EUDR is in addition to the existing European Union Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS), which is administered by the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry.
