Getting NLIS-ready for sheep and goat eIDs

With electronic identification (eID) tags set to become mandatory for all sheep and goats born post-1 January, some producers may still be unsure of how to use the individual tags within the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).

This short guide sets out the required steps to ensure you are NLIS-ready when mandatory tagging comes into effect. The following additional resources will help explain many of these requirements in more detail.

1. Ensuring you have a PIC

Contact your state or territory department to organise a Property Identification Code (PIC) or check that your property’s PIC is in your name. You can find a list of these contacts on the ISC website, or learn more about updating/removing your PIC details here.

2. Ordering NLIS-accredited eID devices

3. Setting up your accounts

4. Moving stock off your PIC

LPA-accredited producers can access the free electronic National Vendor Declarations (eNVD), while non-accredited producers can use a waybill. Learn more about using the eNVD mobile app or web-based system.

Always check that the receiver has recorded the movement in the NLIS by conducting a search of the PIC Register.

5. Receiving stock onto your PIC

Receivers are responsible for recording stock transfers on the NLIS within 48 hours of stock moving onto your PIC, even if the stock is coming from another PIC you own. This is done via your NLIS account and June’s NLIS Tips & Tricks has detailed instructions on how to complete a transfer on the NLIS. 

6. PIC Reconciliations

Check the NLIS database to ensure it is an accurate record of NLIS devices and livestock on your property. Refer to the NLIS how-to guides for conducting a PIC reconciliation by either uploading a file or typing in the details.
